Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the status of pharmacy services network of public hospitals of Bahia State Department of Health. Methods: Transversal, descriptive exploratory study conducted from 2007 to 2008. To evaluate the activities of the hospital pharmacy was used a standardized questionnaire containing sixty two indicators distributed among the following components: management, selection of medicines, logistics, distribution, information, pharmacotherapeutic follow-up and pharmacotechnical. Results: Questionnaires were applied in twenty-two hospitals, 12 (54.5%) located in the capital, and, 10 (45.5%), located in countryside of state. As for the type of care, thirteen (59.1%) were general hospitals. Five (22.7%) had no relation hospitals selected drugs and nine (40.9%) had written protocols for the use of at least one specific drug. The most hospitals units had pharmacist (86.3%). As for location, 15 (68.2%) pharmacies were located inside the building wards/hospital inpatient units. On the structure of pharmacies, 81.8% had drug distribution, 31.8% outpatient dispensing and 59.1%, administrative sector. Twelve pharmacies (54.5%) were linked to the clinical area in the hospital chart. As for inventory management and storage conditions, only 4 (18.2%) hospitals had computerized system. Conclusions: The pharmacies of hospitals under direct management of the Bahia State Department of Health presented low performance related to the majority of the indicators of the evaluated components and predominance of administrative activities in contrast with clinical ones.
