Abstract

Non-adherence reaches almost have of the chronic patient users of medications. Identifying non-adherence to medication is a relevant matter. Objective: the objective of this study is to map the existing literature of methods for measuring it. Method: this narrative review was conducted with no time limit, by searching MEDLINE/PubMed, Scielo and Google Academic databases. Health science descriptors (DeCS) were applied (Medication Adherence; Patient Compliance; Surveys and Questionnaires); MESH terms (medication adherence, patient compliance, surveys and questionnaires); and other terms. Results: adherence measures can be divided into two categories according to whether the assessment is direct or indirect. There is currently no gold standard measure of adherence. Each method has its own strengths and weaknesses. Self-report scale seems to offer advantages for assessing adherence and its behavior in clinical practice and in research. Conclusion: despite all the rich data found in this area, there is no consensus among researchers. We must check what dimension we want to measure in terms of adherence and then choose the appropriate instrument or associate different instruments to achieve the desired measurement.
