Abstract
Blood irradiation is the prophylaxis indicated for Transfusion-Associated Graft-Host Disease - GVHD / AT, a rare and generally fatal syndrome characterized by fever, skin erythema, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, hepatitis and pancytopenia. It can occur in patients with severe immunosuppression and in immunocompetent patients after transfusion of homozygous donor cell blood components into HLA proteins to which the recipient is heterozygous. This work aims to clarify the technical-operational feasibility of implementing a blood irradiation service by SUS in the State of Bahia, without burdening public coffers. The research is classified as exploratory and descriptive. Data collection took place through a literature review and research form sent via e-mail to blood centers in the national public network that perform blood transfusions. This study resulted in the elucidation of the main factors, parameters, risks involved and their respective importance for society, considering that the assessment of operational viability suggests superiority in relation to economic viability. Therefore, the data obtained demonstrated economic-operational feasibility, which corroborates the need to implement a blood irradiation service in a SUS blood center in the State of Bahia.
